Frucor Suntory believes we have a responsibility to contribute towards creating a more sustainable society.
We are actively working towards achieving these five key goals by 2030: zero waste to landfill across all sites, all packaging to be recyclable, reducing Co2 emissions by 50% (direct) and 30% (indirect), reducing water usage by 33%, and for one of every three drinks we sell to be low or no sugar.
We have also teamed up with a number of organisations to help us reach our sustainability goals.

Reduce Co2 Emissions by 50% (direct), 30% (indirect) by 2030
Reducing Co2 emissions is fundamental to any sustainability strategy. And we have been actively measuring our greenhouse gas emissions in almost every one of our departments with help from Toitū Envirocare.
Frucor Suntory is well on track to reach this goal. Between 2017 and 2019 we managed to reduce our carbon emissions by 8%. We have achieved this by:
- introduced fridges that draw on less power and are cheaper to run
- changed how we produce, store and transport our products
- invested in hybrid vehicles for our sales team
- installed energy efficient machinery for our production and storage facilities.
We were named a Top 10 carbon reducer by Toitū in 2020 and a Toitū Brighter Future Finalist in 2021.
Zero waste to landfill across all sites by 2030
This ambitious goal is about sending zero physical waste to landfill from our manufacturing sites, distribution centres and office locations.
With our strategies and partnerships in place, we have so far managed to reduce 200 tonnes of waste going to landfill. At our largest site in south Auckland, 92% of waste from our manufacturing and distribution centre has been recovered and diverted from landfill.
One in three drinks we sell will be low or no sugar by 2030
This is all about ingredient innovation. We’re committed to offering more choice when it comes to low, no and reduced sugar beverages – as well as functionality and more natural ingredients. Our R&D Centre is focused on producing great-tasting low and no sugar drinks – and we’re partnering with Suntory on sugar replacement development and options for the future.
All packaging to be recyclable by 2030
Packaging is a hot topic for consumers – so it’s a hot topic for us, too. We are committed to leading the shift towards a circular economy: by increasing our use of recycled content, evaluating new materials and sources, minimising the volume and weight of our packaging, and working together with industry and government to improve recycling systems and infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand.
We’ve have worked with our external partners and internal innovations team to develop new rPET packaging for our drinks. All PET containers can be recycled at kerbside and in public place recycling sites across New Zealand and Australia. A colour removal programme is also underway to improve the recyclability of our PET packaging. Our cans now contain 66% of recycled material – and more than half of our products are produced in aluminium cans.
Frucor Suntory is a founding signatory of the Ministry for the Environment’s New Zealand Plastics Packaging Declaration; we’re also a supporter of the Public Place Recycling scheme, which has introduced 2,800 recycling bins across New Zealand to date.
We are a member of the Packaging Forum, which promotes and funds consumer awareness programmes about packaging recycling and litter reduction.
Reduce water usage by 33% by 2030
As part of the Suntory Group, water conservation is a key component of our sustainability goals. We aim to reduce water usage by 33% by the end of 2030 – with a focus on our main manufacturing plant in Auckland.
We’ve introduced a number of water saving initiatives in the last six months designed to reduce and reuse water across the site – and removed more than 12 million litres of water annually from the manufacturing process.
